OPEN THE WARMING SHELTER

An elderly man wearing a brown jacket and a red and white trucker hat, sitting and looking to his right with a serious expression.

The warming shelter in Longview is only open if the forecast calls for multiple days in freezing weather. We believe that is it inhumane to require the unhoused survive multiple nights in 35 degree weather. We demand the City Council open the warming shelter at higher temperatures to prevent undue suffering in frigid temperatures.

Cold Doesn’t Have to Be Freezing to Kill

Most hypothermia cases in the Pacific Northwest happen above 32°F — because rain and wind strip body heat fast. A wet, unhoused person can go hypothermic at 40–45°F in under an hour. That’s why major cities now open warming centers during any night below 40°F or any cold, soaking rain.

Waiting for 33°F ignores the science — and puts people in danger.
